Description
Check out the Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction soundtrack on vinyl!
On the double LP, the "REACT splatter" discs will be slipped into a deluxe gatefold sleeve adorned with an illustration of the Ubisoft Montreal team. The 19 tracks mastered for vinyl by sonic special operations agents will be pressed on thick microgroove records.
Composer James Duhamel teamed up with the One Take Tigers (as Ubisoft Montreal’s sound engineers are known) to create a mysterious and eerie real-time generative score for Extraction. The fragments queued up in-game include electronic sounds created by Duhamel, a rabid synthesizer collector, and a set of acoustic instruments recorded by him and the “Tigers”—all synced to the same bpm and key to help the building blocks come together.
The score’s “force trio” consists of octobass, ondes martenot, and pipe organ, complemented by instruments such as banjo and clarinet, and percussion such as angklung and waterphones. Some live recordings were subjected to real-time audio processing to create eerie effects in the moment. And it’s not uncommon for an audio team to sneak other oddities into a soundscape—rakes, sword clashes, and kitchen utensils serve as percussive sounds on Extraction’s soundtrack.
To compose the soundtrack album from musical fragments of a game whose score was otherwise random, the team brought an authorial touch to the process, creating a sort of structured musical narrative. The goal was to create an album that was original, immersive, and helped communicate the game's mood.
