Based on the novel Twins by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland, Dead Ringers tells the story of two identical twin gynecologists - Elliot the slave and Beverly the sensitive, bipolar sides of the same personality - who share the same office, the same apartment and the same women. It is a chilling tale, but it marks a high point in Cronenberg and Shore's joint filmography.
Shore's score creates an atmosphere that is both beautiful and mysterious. However, Shore uses the beauty of a string orchestra to represent the sinister. Howard Shore said that "the music of Dead Ringers works all around the edges. It's all about subtext." Shore won the Genie Award for the score of Dead Ringers.
