The core of the franchise features an apocalyptic mecha action story, revolving around the efforts of the paramilitary organization NERV to combat hostile beings called Angels, using giant humanoids called Evangelions (or EVAs for short) piloted by selected teenagers.
Since the anime series' release in 1995, the series' popularity has spawned numerous additional media, including video games, radio plays, audiobooks, a novel, pachinko machines, and a film tetralogy titled Rebuild of Evangelion.
Neon Genesis Evangelion has become one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time.
