Under immense pressure in a terrifying and oppressive environment, Michael J. Goreng, an infamous zoologist and epidemiologist, is trapped in a distorted version of his own home. His wife and daughter are in grave danger. He can barely make out shadows and certain objects. He is in a room. He recognizes it. He is at his aunts' mansion in Burkittsville. But something has changed. He remembers his aunt's stories of moaning ghosts during the Civil War and stories of witches burned on crosses. He is aware of the second hand on the clock. It feels like a warning. The door is locked with chains. Something is seriously wrong. Mike looks for exits. There is nothing. He sees a bloody message carved into the wall: "She's coming." He has woken up in a nightmare and has trouble remembering his life so far. He knows he has to escape. He has to find his wife Julia and his daughter Anne. A loud laugh alerts him. But who is coming? The clock stops. Without understanding how, he knows he has to flee. He knows something bad is coming. In his head, he begins to wonder about the objects in this dark room.
